CIA hosts McLean chamber event
The Central Intelligence Agency is not only the nation's first line of defense but also a good neighbor.
That was the message Oct. 27 when the CIA hosted a reception for the McLean Chamber of Commerce at its headquarters in Langley.
The chamber event, which was the first since 9-11, 2001 to be held at CIA headquarters, was attended by 95 attendees including state delegate Margi Vanderhye and Fairfax County Supervisor John Foust.
“We are not officially a member of the McLean Chamber of Commerce, but we take pride in being a good neighbor. Many of our employees live here and in surrounding communities, and they certainly patronize local businesses,” said CIA spokesman Mark Mansfield.
Since its headquarters was built in the early 1960's, the CIA has been and continues to be McLean’s largest employer. Mansfield said that 50 percent of the agency's current workforce has been hired since September 11, 2001 and have yet to experience a presidential administration change.
"After nearly 50 years in Langley, it's difficult to imagine CIA anywhere else," said CIA Director Michael V. Hayden in an address to the reception's attendees. "Thanks to President Eisenhower, we have this beautiful patch of northern Virginia for our headquarters."
Hayden, a Fairfax County resident himself, said that "considering where a lot of our people are serving these days, it's a very nice place to come home to...we are your friends and neighbors."
