Board continues budget review

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors continued its close examination of the budget with all-day meetings Sept. 29 and Oct. 6. In an effort to address a $430 million budget shortfall, the board is meeting with leaders of every county agency to review spending. Each agency was asked to envision what it would cut if it had to cut 15 percent.

"Everybody's getting a good feel for what we do and how we do it," said Budget Committee Chair Sharon Bulova (D-Braddock). "We'll also come out with some possible efficiencies."

But, she noted, items agencies raise during the review meetings are not the only things on the table. For example, the board's meeting with the Park Authority Monday focused more on program and service delivery than administrative costs, she said.

The board is also conducting a series of community meetings to solicit feedback about the types of services county residents value. For more information on community meetings or to view the reviews county agencies, visit www.fairfaxcounty.gov/government/budget.
