Hypothermia centers to open next month

On Dec. 1, faith communities, in partnership with Fairfax County government and local nonprofit organizations, will begin the fifth year of the county’s hypothermia shelter program for homeless adults during the winter.

Referrals are to be made to the hypothermia centers only after a determination that county year-round shelter bed space and their winter overflow bed space are not available.

The North County hypothermia center, in its third year of operation at the Cameron Glen Human Services building in Reston, is managed by Reston Interfaith. The North County location will operate from Dec. 1 to March 15. Hours of operation are from 5 p.m. to 7 a.m., seven days a week.

FACETS, in the central part of the county, and Volunteers of America (operators of another community shelter) in the eastern part of the county, will coordinate with faith communities and volunteers to provide overnight shelter and meals.
