Two-alarm fire kills Vienna resident

On June 13, Vienna resident Virginia Casey,86 was killed in a two-alarm fire at her house at 308 Plum St. SW.

“Vienna lost one of its great citizens,” Vienna Town Councilman Dan Dellinger said days later.

The incident is still under investigation. The cause of Casey's death was smoke inhalation, according to the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department.

Firefighters responded to the two-alarm fire at about 4:20 a.m., finding heavy fire coming from the rear of the single-family home on their arrival. When first responders arrived, the home and a nearby shed were both “fully involved with fire.”

Two other occupants of the house were warned of the blaze by a smoke alarm, and both escaped with non-life-threatening injuries. Casey was found dead at the scene. The fire eventually grew large enough that a second alarm was struck, summoning over 60 emergency personnel to the scene.

The fire was brought under control in approximately 40 minutes, according to fire and rescue officials.

One adult male was transported to Inova Fairfax Hospital and one adult male was transported to the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Washington, DC. A family dog also died in the fire.

Damage is estimated at $300,000 and the home is a complete loss, according to fire officials. This is the fourth fatal fire of the year for Fairfax County.
