Doyle hangs 'em up at Centreville
Centreville boys basketball coach Brian Doyle announced Wednesday that he is stepping down after three seasons with the Wildcats. Doyle recently received a promotion to Assistant Principal at Centreville High School, and he feels he will no longer have the time to fully devote to the basketball program.
"As I had more time to think about it, between that position and being a head basketball coach and having two kids, the last thing I want to do is not do the best I could in any one of those areas," said Doyle, whose son Brandon, 10, and daughter Callie, 8, are both involved in youth sports. "I felt like I reached a point where I had to take something off my plate."
In addition to his three years at Centreville, Doyle spent 10 years as the head coach at Langley, and 24 total years as a coach. He racked up 148 wins in his 13 seasons as a head coach, winning three regular-season Liberty District championships with Langley, and four district tournament titles.
"This really doesn't have anything to do with my desire to coach," Doyle said. "I want to stay involved in the game. I love coaching."
Centreville will begin its search for a new coach, but Doyle's successor might have been sitting next to him on the Wildcats' bench this year. Drew Murphy came to Centreville as an assistant in 2007-08 after five years as head coach at McLean. Doyle said he was not in a position to comment on the search for his replacement.
"I said to the kids today, to me coaching and teaching is all about relationships," Doyle said. "I've worked with great people and formed some lasting relationships with players I've coached. That's what stands out in my mind."
