Robinson hires new boys basketball coach

Robinson Director of Student Activities Mike McGurk announced today that Brian Nelson has been hired as the new boys varsity basketball coach. Nelson replaces Matt McKeag, who left the program after three seasons as head coach.

Nelson has spent the last three years as the JV coach and a varsity assistant at Langley High School and was the Saxons' freshman coach the year before. He also served as an assistant coach at Honeoye Falls-Lima High School in Honeoye, N.Y., from 1998 to 2004.

"It's great to finally have this opportunity," said Nelson, a self-described basketball junkie. "It's something I've worked hard for. I'm walking into a great situation. Matt [McKeag] has done a great job and turned the program around. I'm optimistic that I can build on the success he had here."

Nelson said he gained great experience in his four years working under Langley coach Travis Hess, who led the Saxons to the Northern Region final this season.

"I learned a great deal from Travis," said Nelson, who will teach chemistry at Robinson as well. "We've had a great relationship. Those kids really bought into the things we did over there. I plan on relying a lot on that here."

McGurk said he lined up seven candidates for the vacant head coaching position, and Nelson was one of two called back for a second interview.

"He came across as very energetic," McGurk said. "His references were amazing as both a coach and a teacher. He's willing to work hard. It's not an easy job, but as Matt showed, with some hard work, you can be very competitive."

Said Nelson, "I'm passionate about teaching the game the right way. I'm very enthusiastic as both a teacher and a coach. I want my players to get better at the game and better as people."
