Chantilly boys cruise into state semifinals
After a 10-day layoff following his team's Northern Region title game victory, and a rain delay Saturday, Chantilly boys lacrosse coach Kevin Broderick could sense that his players were ready to get back on the field. The Chargers got their chance Sunday afternoon and made quick work of Patrick Henry-Roanoke, earning a 22-3 state quarterfinal win.
“We were a little antsy, I think, and ready to play,” Broderick said. “We came out quickly and it gave us more confidence. That hurt them a little bit. We put the game away pretty early.”
Senior Joe Fratter scored the first of his team-high five goals just more than a minute into the game and Chantilly never looked back. The Chargers led 10-0 after one quarter, 15-0 at half and 20-0 after three quarters. The large lead allowed Broderick to play everyone on his bench, and 18 different players recorded at least one point.
“We did play an awful lot of guys, so that was really good for us,” Broderick said. “A lot of guys got opportunities to participate and we feel good about that.”
Patrick Henry's scoring chances were few and far between for most of the game, but junior goalie Derek Kegerreis was more than equal to the challenge, not allowing a goal in the three quarters in which he played.
The Chargers advance to the state semifinals, where they will face Western Albemarle Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Westfield High School.
The Chantilly girls lacrosse team also recorded a state quarterfinal win Sunday, defeating Broad Run, 15-8. Junior Katie Stillwell led the Chargers with five goals. Chantilly will face Albemarle in the state semifinals Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Westfield.
