Economic downturn hits hard for area uninsured

For low-income residents in Fairfax County, an economic downturn can mean the choice between medicines and other basic living expenses. The Virginia Health Atlas estimates 33,000 people living 200 percent or under the poverty level are uninsured in the county.
“We have seen an increase in patients who are feeling the pressure, either from a recent job loss or increased fuel prices,” according to Jeanie Schmidt Free Clinic Executive Director Meagan Ulrich.
In partnership with the Virginia Health Care Foundation, the clinic has expanded its hours over the past year and is working to serve the uninsured in northwest Fairfax County. It provides physicals for children and treatment and medication for adults with hypertension or diabetes.
